Trajectories of Math Performance: From Preschool to Postsecondary

Traj

GTF Fellow Dr. Sarah R. Powell (UT-Austin) and Dr. Gena Nelson (University of Minnesota) synthesized longitudinal research related to mathematics to help policymakers and educators understand students’ long-term mathematics performance and the need for adequate mathematics instruction across school settings.

They concluded that postsecondary success begins long before students enter college:

  • Math performance at earlier time points is predictive of math performance at later time points.
  • Students who perform well in math continue to perform well in math; students who experience difficulty with math skills or concepts continue to experience difficulty.
  • Math performance in school has implications for students in adulthood.
