Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Greater Texas Foundation’s mission is to ensure all Texas students are prepared for, have access to, persist in, and complete a postsecondary education. Through our work, we have learned many of the most significant challenges for students can occur during times of transition. In fact, one of our strategic focus areas is based on identifying and addressing ways to smooth the transition between high school and college for Texas students.

You’ll see many examples of work focused on transitions in our grantmaking. For example, the Texas Pathways project supports institutions of higher education in helping students choose, persist in, and complete their educational pathways. We also support work focused specifically on another significant transition for students – the transfer between two-year and four-year institutions. You can learn more about that transition in this report by the Community College Research Center (CCRC) at Columbia University or our own brief on Texas transfer data and challenges.

Beyond our grantmaking, 2016 was a year of transitions for Greater Texas Foundation as an organization as well. Most significantly, our President & CEO Dr. Wynn Rosser transitioned to the T.L.L. Temple Foundation in East Texas, and our long-time Chair Dr. Malon Southerland retired from the board after more than 30 years of service. We are incredibly grateful and indebted to Dr. Rosser and Dr. Southerland for their strong leadership, particularly in helping Greater Texas Foundation grow into a highly effective and strategic education funder.

Transitions can be times of challenge, but also times of learning and growth as well. We are excited about the future of Greater Texas Foundation and exploring ways the foundation can increase its positive impact on Texas students. We take pride in being an organization that is always learning, evaluating, and assessing how to be more effective. Moreover, we are eager to continue to work with our partners both in the state and nationally to address the tough challenges facing Texas students.

Thank you for all you do to support Texas students, and thank you for your interest in Greater Texas Foundation.
